I know it's a bit early, but might be a good time to start thinking about Ojai. We just made our reservations at the Oakridge Inn, on the off chance that we do get to go this year. But, the manager of the Inn had heard that Ojai had been canceled. We told him it had been condensed into one weekend. Right now, the rates are at a low $76 dollars a night..down from $96 last year. So, with only 33 or so rooms available, you might want to get your reservations in now, as the Oakridge is the first hotel listed on the Ojai web site.
And this year, I'm calling ahead of time to make sure the hot tub is working!!!! LOL |

Heads up guys:
~ATTENTION ALL OJAI PARTICIPANTS~
After 20 years of event production at Lake Casitas, the Lake Management has decided to increase our fees by assessing a “camping and use fee” for all participants. Everyone participating will be charged $12, which will be good for the weekend and will include wrist band, camping Friday & Saturday, and vehicle pass. Vendors will receive ONE free pass per booth. Children under twelve will be excluded.
The lake Rangers will be enforcing this new fee by monitoring the vehicles on-site. If proper vehicle “tag” is not visible on your vehicle, Lake Casitas will issue a fine of $50. Your vehicle “tag” will be issued at time of registration.
We appreciate your participation in our events over the years and hope you will continue with us.
Thank you,
Dick & Condit Wixon

Ransom told me that their costs were getting too prohibitive, so this makes sense. It was either that or move the event elsewhere and not allow black powder, which would spoil it completely! Compared to the other costs (gas, hotel, etc.) $12 is nothing! _________________

OK I'll get "kracken" on the camp layout next week. Here is a repost from Facebook. Our application came in and I can confirm/deny the following rumors...
Looks like some of the rumors surrounding the Ojai Pirate Faire were correct and others were not. Here's the skinny:
Please be advised that due to the event organizers being charged a fee by Lake Casitas, EACH OF US WILL NEED TO COUGH UP $12 PER PERSON FOR THE WEEKEND. (Still a great deal for one of the most fun events ever IMHO!) Please plan to pay at the gate when you pick up your wristband. Please bring cash.
Also new this year, when you pick up your wristband get a tag for your vehicle. Lake Casitas rangers will charge untagged vehicles a $50 fine.
There are no indications that there are any changes to the black powder regulations on this years application. Shoot away mates! Arrr!! _________________

Jaxx you're talking a 16' circumference, not diameter, right? Also is there any way we can go smaller than 10' x 10' on the kitchen this year? I'm having trouble fitting everyone. _________________

Crew, we have space issues and I'm going to need everyone to be willing to be a bit flexible here.
Jaxx, I need ot know the diameter of your tent. I can fit a 10' but there is no way in heck I can fit a 16' diameter tent. I am hoping you weren't talking diameter on your earlier post?
Jaxx, can the kitchen be smaller than 10' x 10'? If your tent really is 16' across, would you rather give up the ktchen, or bring a smaller tent?
Iron Jack and RH Jill, I shortened the fly in front of the Bang & Boom by 2', will that work? Would it be an option not to bring the tent and just use the fly?
This is the reality of what we're dealing with here:

I'm sorry I had no idea space was limited at this event.
Please - We don't want to short change yer members. fit us in last if'n ya got room . 7X10 is bout as`small a space as my tent will fit.
Altho we'd prefer to camp with ye if possible, is there modern camping available fer participants? If so that gives us another option.
Thank ye!

Well it looks as though the organizers didna give us much room to set up a large group.. Me also thinks it as a Suggestion, to -e- mail them and ask for a few more feet each way to accommodate our needs. Ifen it gets to be too big a problem I could move myself to the waters edge east of the privies. However Eye will be as flexible as possible before coming to that conclusion.. _________________

Space is super limited at Ojai unfortuantely. But we would love to have both of you in camp. So let's see if we can't do some faneggallin' and fit you in. I'm thinking that if Jaxx tent really is 16' in diameter if I put her in the back corner where the kitchen is and reduce the kitchen size I can make this happen. _________________

Unfortunately, the fly is held up by the bang and boom hut.
BTW, I don't think Patt will be there - he's been going to Burning Man these past few years and there's only about a week between the events. _________________

Also, we need to keep in mind that oftentimes we don't get the space we were allotted. Folks on both ends take a few feet here and there and since we travel further than probably every other group, we're the last ones and end up with less space.
And I'd like to get some ideas about the back fence area. Last year, all we had was a rope to hang from the garden hooks and I threw some fabric I happened to have over it. It looked pretty darn pathetic - everyone else had these nice, tall backdrops that gave their areas some privacy and we had this wimpy, cobbled-together excuse for a fence that anyone could step over. This isn't such a problem with other faires, but since the back of our camp butts up against a road, I'd prefer to err on the side of privacy.
What I'd like to suggest is something like this:
http://www.lowes.com/pd_231190-87439-654194_0_?productId=3159943&Ntt=bamboo+fencing&Ntk=i_products&pl=1¤tURL=/pl__0__s?newSearch=true$Ntt=bamboo%20fencing$y=0$x=0
We could use our existing shepherd's hooks to act as posts to hold it up. I think three of these would do it - the remaining five feet would be covered by the porta potty enclosure. _________________

It is $21.00 for fifteen feet, so we would need four rolls to do the back of the camp which is fifty feet long. We would have to take that out of the Tales account. It's up to you guys, I can make the purchase if you want, so chime in and let me know and we can do whatever the group agrees upon. _________________

Hey -it looks like the event policies say ya can't tear down or high tail it out of there before crowd is cleared after 6PM on Sunday... And camps have to be down Sunday night... Is this true?
Aye have a 7 hour drive from Phoenix, was gonna take Friday off, but looks like I need Monday off and a hotel Sunday night ??
Can I take me tent down Sunday morning, what be me options here? What do you all do when driving down from the Northern reaches?
Thank ye,

@ Pete... I believe that if you run by the organizers, the fact that you will be out of the camp by Monday, there should be no problem. We have broken most of camp down on Sun... and left mid Monday. The Rum Runners, who are next to us... take 3 days to set up... I do not think that they could break down in one evening.... You could send the organizers a note asking.... We too have a 6/7 hour drive home..... _________________ Purveyor of fine Treasures and Wot-nots

Pete, that's right, if you have a tent in camp, you have to leave it up until after the faire closes at 6pm on Sunday. You can do some "soft tear down" packing up stuff inside your tent earlier, but no, you cannot pull down a tent before the event is over. They have stopped us when people tried to pack up early. If I put you in the back of the camp, you could tear down early Sunday morning as long as the tent was not up when the faire opens and as long as it doesn't leave a gapping hole in the camp. That's about the only way around it. Let me know ASAP.
Sorry mate, but if your tent is in the encampment ye be there for the long haul. _________________

Apologies, most weekend events we've attended are tearing down by 4pm on Sunday, so this caught us by surprise.
We're lookin at getting monday off and if camping til Monday morning be an option we might be good.
Else we may have to reconsider... getting home at 2-3AM and having to go to work at 7AM makes fer a tough trip.

@ Pete
Chain Shot and I get a motel room, since for us, the drive down is around 12-13 hrs. We will be driving down on Thursday, and driving back on Monday. Yeah, it's a long haul, but Ojai is our home event, even though NorCal is closer. Ojai is where we first met the Tales gang, and were received like long lost family. It was touch and go this year, whether we could make it or not, but Robert requested and got the time off just yesterday, and we had made our reservations months ago, just in case, since the rooms at the Oakridge Inn fill up fast.
Come on, it's Ojai.... can't miss that!
Anyway, can't wait to see everyone! |

I will try to get the camp layout up tonight. Old Crow what can you scale down to? I may need to have you go smaller if you can. I'll try to squeeze in the tent.
Pete for camping after the event is over Sunday night they do allow it and the way it gets done is that I just let the organizers know which people are there an extra day, but we don't do it until we actually arrive at the event. _________________

Dearest Cap'n,
I looked up the merchants from whom I purchased me 9X9 A-frame and it seems they gots a smaller tent that just may make things a wee bit....less congestive. (fancy wordin' fer a swamp brigand). It appears to be a 6X8, just wide enough fer me cot and a few pieces of gear. What say ye?
Standin' by fer orders.......
